Ilo Ilo

In the late nineties, Teresa leaves her home in the Philippines to work as a domestic helper in Singapore for a strained middle-class family of three. Her arrival initially exacerbates the tensions that exist in the Lim household, but a bond gradually develops between her and the family's rambunctious son. As the Asian Financial Crisis takes its toll, the economic and emotional insecurities that underlie the family's daily lives and interactions boil to the surface.
